. Two weeks ago Christoph and I were invited on a little weekend getaway to check out the Hotel & Wirtshaus Post, which currently got under a new management. Happy about that much needed vacation as we both were drowning in last minute university work we used that weekend to clear our heads and explored a part of Austria we have both never been to.
“What? You have never been to Kitzbühel?“ another guest at Hotel Post asked us not really believing. Tja, I have been to so many places in my life but I personally had never felt the urge to go to Kitzbühel in particular. Looking back now I don’t understand myself either. This spot of land around St.Johann, Kitzbühel and Ellmau is probably one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. It’s not that picture perfect tropical kind of beautiful – it is much more a very down to earth atmosphere (beside the glamour of Kitzbühel). Mountains, valleys, alpine pastures, villages and great cities such as Munich and Salzburg within reach.
We arrived on Friday evening and straight headed for the BBQ organized by the hotel. Dressed up in my beloved Gössl-Dirndl and Christoph in his „Lederhosen“ – which was the dress code – we strolled around lovely St.Johann and admired the beautifully renovated Hotel Post, which was built in 1224 (impressive, even for Middle European standards!). The food was delicious and we had a lot of fun, while always gazing at the amazing mountains which surround St.Johann like the Kitzbühler Horn and the Wilder Kaiser.
The next day we went to explore Kitzbühel for the day, as the weather wasn’t good enough for hiking – but even the constant rain couldn’t stop us from visiting the impressive start of the famous Hahnenkamm Rennen. „Die Streif“ is probably as important to Austrians as Neujahrskonzert, Opernball and National Day all together. After watching the most famous ski-race in the world every single year of my life it was now great to see it’s steepness and the crazy jumps the ski racers have to take in order to win this hell of a ride and become a legend for good.
Back down in the valley we explored super lovely Kitzbühel and strolled the beautiful, historical center. After a little shopping and lunch at Il Centro we headed back to St.Johann. Half way back the sun came back out and we decided to explore some more – driving about the country, turning around again just to drive up another road, which turned out to be a dead end too. But as we hadn’t had any exact place in mind we simply drove around Ellmau and Going, enjoying the warm sun and then headed back to the hotel.
The evening back at Hotel & Wirtshaus Post was great. We first had a nice dinner which was all about Austrian finger food (my favorite!) and then we hung out at the bar sipping delicious cocktails. All in all a perfect day and we enjoyed every single minute of it.
Sooner than expected Sunday came and we had to check out because of work and guilty conscience. But there was still a 4h drive between St.Johann and our college books so we decided to take a little detour! We took the road through Leongang and Saalfelden all the way up to the Hochkönig Pass. This pass offers panoramic views on the impressive Hochkönig and beautiful alpine pastures. It is also great for a motorbike tour!
Allover it had been a great weekend and I hope to be back in that part of Austria anytime soon!
Have you ever been to Kitzbühel and about?
*thank you for the invitation to the amazing Hotel & Wirtshaus Post in St.Johann and their great team
