Oh Vienna! Currently the city is showing itself from it’s most beautiful side and one big part of it are the countless Christmas Markets that light up the cold viennese nights. So find out which are my Top 5 Christmas Markets in Vienna!
#1 | Christmas Market at Spittelberg
Atmosphere // In short: beautiful. But actually that’s not nearly enough. The Christmas Market at Spittelberg is the most astonishing one in Vienna. This is were tradition meets art and good food mixes with delicious punch. It is situated in the small alleys of the 7th district with it’s very old baroque buildings. The visitors are of all ages and because it is the most beautiful you find many locals around here enjoying the Christmas Spirit.
Shopping // If you are looking for something handmade and arty than Spittelberg is the place for you to be. Because beside the stalls selling hand made products also the small art galleries and jewelry designer open their doors for Christmas market visitors till late at night.
Food/Drinks // The punch is legendary and when it come to food you can find everything here from yummy waffles to pretzels and hearty Frankfurter and cheese kransky (sausage).
Activities // The Christmas Market at Spittelberg is a traditional one and more for getting together and enjoying the evening. There are no specific activities for kids (as far as I know) but they definitely gonna have fun too.
#2 | Weihnachtsdorf at Altes AKH (Uni Campus)
Atmosphere // Beside the Christmas Market at Spittelberg the one situated in the Altes AKH which is now home to many departments of the University of Vienna. But even though the Weihnachtsdorf at the UNI Campus isn’t for students only. There is so much to see for the whole family and its very relaxed and down to earth atmosphere makes it one of my favorite one in Vienna.
Shopping // Of course you can shop around the Weihnachtsdorf but to be honest you won’t find that beautiful gifts than at the other markets but when strolling the market you might find something your are looking for.
Food/Drinks // It is hard not to find something at the Weihnachtsdorf. Great punch and nom nom roasted almonds are my usual when I’m at the market 🙂
Activities // Fun for the whole family. There is everything your are looking for in one single christmas market. You can go on a ride with a mini version of the Viennese ferries wheel and watch kids going crazy on a small train, which is much better than any cabaret artist I’ve ever seen! Moreover there is a small ice skating ground.
#3 | Advent Market at Karlsplatz
Atmosphere // The market is situated right in front of the beautiful Karlskirche and the whole place is illuminated by lovely christmas lights. It is quite big but still has got it’s special charm and focus on handicraft and art, which you can experience everywhere.
Shopping // Like at Spittelberg this Christmas Market is for the art lovers but also if your are looking for traditional christmas tree decoration and small gift, which are almost all handmade.
Food/Drinks // The Advent Market at Karlsplatz is famous for its delicacy and Christmas bakeries so this is a place for gourmets!
Activities // Beside well organized events and concerts the Advent Market at Karlsplatz also offers School Projects, children’s zoo with lamas (which is the cutest part of the market) and of course a kid’s carrousel.

#4 | Christmas Market at Rathaus
Atmosphere // Pure kitsch. But even though I’m not a fan of “too much” I still like this Christmas Market. Situated at the vast place in front of the Viennese city hall this market shows all the christmas lights the city has to offer
Shopping // If you are into lush christmas decoration than this is the place for you to be! I’ve never soon more beautiful christmas tree balls than here. And even though I prefer more modest christmas decoration I still have to admit that a little kitsch never hurt nobody!
Food/Drinks // As well as on any other christmas market in Vienna the one at Rathaus offers everything that make a christmas lovers smile but still the Christmas Market at Rathaus is more for shopping and admiring the great christmas lights.
Activities // The best thing to do at the market is just strolling around – especially through the park the surrounds the Christmas Market and which’s trees are all beautifully decorated.
#5 | Weihnachten at MQ
First things first, this is not a Christmas Market like the others but it is my favorite place in Vienna when I’m out with friends which is why I decided to include this one in my list of the best 5 Christmas Markets in Vienna. The thing is you won’t be able to buy anything else than punch and a bite to eat there, but that’s exactly what makes the market at Museumsquartier (MQ) so special. It is a true punch market curated by the cafés, restaurants and bars of the museum complex and definitely has the best punch in Vienna – especially the ones at Halle are to die for.
And if your are up for a game – check out the curling ground and try your best 🙂
I really hope you enjoy my Christmas Market guide and probably visit one of Vienna’s amazing markets one day!
