Here’s a little update from my Canada adventure: I’m in the wilderness right now – literally surrounded by wolves, bears and elks – and I still haven’t found words to describe what’s going on around me. But first I want to show you a few impressions on my road trip from Calgary to Jasper on the Icefields Parkway, which was definitely the perfect start for an adventurous week!
We arrived in Calgary in the late afternoon and straight headed for dinner – steak of course 🙂 Afterwards we slept like babies even though we woke up every few hours due to a terrible jet lag. On the next morning we walked the nearly empty streets of Calgary as it was Good Friday and everyone used that day for sleeping in or something. It was quite interesting getting to know a city this way. Anyway, we had a nice breakfast and amazing coffee at a lovely place called DeVille – and if you guys ever happen to be in Calgary pop by for a blueberry scone – nom nom 🙂
A few hours later – after wandering the still empty streets – we hoped into our rented car and headed North. First we drove through basically unspectacular farmland – cows on the right and grain fields on the left – but we were speechless because as Austrians we are not used to this endless widths. At the time we reached the entrance to Banff Nationalpark I already had taken 200 pictures of grain and cows, but I won’t show them here 🙂 When we approached the first of the three parks we were about to cross on our road trip to the Heliskiing Lodge I knew it’s going to be one of the most amazing trips I’ve ever been on.
Impressive cliffs, glaciers, mountain goats and endless straight roads – the Icefields Parkways had it all. And while I lost track on which Nationalpark we were in I stared out of the window admiring one of the most breathtaking landscapes I have ever seen.
After hours of driving we ended up in Jasper – a typical northern american town (with more motels than actual town houses). Day turned into night and we enjoyed an amazing dinner at a small restaurant. In the darkness we found our motel somewhere along the main road and hoped that we wouldn’t see a bear, as we heard that only recently a cyclist has been attack by a Grizzly nearby. Happy that we hadn’t got a room at the ground floor I fell asleep and dreamed of what would come the following days!
Hope you enjoyed this little post and will be back here soon for the big heliskiing post 🙂
