The north always had a special appeal on me – it’s not only the design and the great style that Scandinavians sport whenever they step on the streets – it’s the modest tranquility of the cities mixed with a breathtakingly exciting and raw nature. Helsinki definitely combines all the great features of the north in one: sights, life and street style, lovely café and nice, interesting people and the (sometimes) rough sea.
Last weekend I visited Helsinki again after eight years with my sister and a friend of hers. We had so much fun exploring the city, walking every district and enjoying our breakfast at the harbor and I fell in love with it all over again. The Finish capital isn’t a big city, not a cosmopolitan melting pot and that’s the cities very special charm. Helsinki is down to earth and rethinks it’s routs over and over again while never cutting them loose. I could go on for hours about the cities unique vibe.
Anyway, what have we been doing? Of course sightseeing – as my last visit to Finnland was in summer before I turned fifteen and my memories of the main sights have only been very vague. On the check-list has been the Helsinki Cathedral (the white minster), Uspenski Cathedral (the red church), a sightseeing boat ride where you learn a lot about the city and it’s history and of course strolling down Esplanadi. Beside the obligatory sightseeing we enjoyed our Sunday evening at the zoo which is situated on one of the cities islands and is definitely one of the most beautiful I’ve ever been to. The rest of our time we just strolled around exploring every district by foot, having coffee at the loveliest café tasting the most delicious korvapuusti (cinnamon rolls) and enjoying the city.
Thanks to Mika from Bonny and Kleid – who shared some amazing insider tipps with us – we got to know the city from a very special perspective. She told us where to eat, what we have to see when in Helsinki and how to enjoy the city in the most unique way – and I’m planning to share everything with you soon in another 7 places to visit in … – like the one I did on Barcelona.
But now I’ve to pack my suitcase again for the next adventure – staring tomorrow. This time I’ll be in Portugal exploring Porto and then I gonna enjoy the sun at the Algarve with la famiglia 🙂
