Let’s talk tech. There are so many useful and of course useless apps out there in this smartphone friendly world that it is hard to find the real thing. Travel Apps are all over the market and one can choose from thousands of different apps all serving the exact same purpose. But in this post I want to highlight 5 apps that are my constant companions while traveling and in-between – some of them also had been very helpful while exploring the wilderness of Alberta and British Columbia where this picture had been shot in April 2015.
#1 maps.me – know how to get around
I already shared this app with you in my post on 10 essential travel tips regarding South East Asia. This offline map saved me a lot of trouble and made getting around in Asia super easy. As one can download a map for every country I use it for all of my journeys – no mater if city trip or a big adventure. The app is for free and I can’t image a better quality as the map also includes information on restaurants, sights, important places plus one can mark spots so they are easily remembered. So if you are looking for a great way to be independed from google maps and/or you travel on the far edge of network coverage I would highly recommend maps.me to any globetrotter.
#2 day one classic – keep track on your journey
This app is like a journal of your adventures. With options like adding pictures, tracking your exact rout via google maps, writing down memories and much more this app makes your smartphone the perfect travel diary. For 4.99€ in the App Store it isn’t exactly cheap but saving space and minimizing one’s backpack’s weight by transferring your logbook to your smartphone will definitely be worth it. Regarding security – the app offers fingerprint and/or passcode options to keep your data save.
#3 packpoint – organize your packing like a pro
Do you know the feeling of having forgotten something when leaving for an adventure? Yes? Then this app is something you might be interested in. Traveling requires planning, no matter what people say, and it starts with your suitcase. You can write down everything you need for your next trip in this app and also set a deadline so you won’t be late for packing. This is great if you need to take care of Visa and medical stuff – which sometimes have to be done weeks in advance. Of course you can write down a list, but I usually lose list like these and have to do it all over again, while I normally don’t lose my smartphone 🙂
#4 Twenty20 – monetize your shots to finance your travels dreams
There are already many travel apps out there that make it possible for you to sell your pictures – one I use is Twenty20, which is great if you are looking for a nice and easy way to make money out of your travel photography. This app makes it possible for anyone to sell their own pictures to agencies, magazines etc. who are looking for authentic pictures to spice up their online and social media content. I only recently started using this app and I haven’t earned a dime yet but I’m confident that someone will come around. One can also enter challenges to win a price of 20-40$ by uploading one picture to the competition and the community will vote for the best contribution. So I gonna keep up using this app and maybe one day it will be part of my travel-financing-plan 🙂
#5 TripAdvisor – always informed
Okay, this might be a brainer but trip advisor helped me so many times already – especially in Vietnam. I always love to check out restaurants there and also found my favorite café The Espresso Embassy in Budapest via this app/website. Only that I prefer the app. It is easier to tag places you are interested in so you won’t forget about them while looking for other options.
So these are my top 5 travel apps that are all on my smartphone and that help me all the time wherever I am. Do you have any travel apps on your phone? I would love to hear about them!
